  • RAM Preview suddenly very short

    Hello,

I haven’t worked with after effects for a while, and now I am having two issues:

    1) After Effects RAM preview only can last a few seconds, lets say 3 or so (then it stops automatically, which usually is the behaviour when the RAM is used up). This is the same when using Nucleo Pro or when not using it.

I have Windows XP x64, 8 GB RAM. As you can imagine, the RAM is NEVER EVER(!!) used up after after effects (CS3) stops rendering the RAM preview. The AE settings (Edit > Preferences > memory&Cache) are at “100% (4,0 GB)”. It used to work before, now it doesn’t. I must have changed something in the months I didn’t work with AE, but I can’t think of anything. Your help would really be appreciated.

    2) After fiddling with installing and uninstalling Graphic drivers (I have a NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GTS) AE now refuses to identify my Card as a OpenGL-compatible one. In the settings dialog the “Enable OpenGL” checkbox is grayed out, and when I click on the info button it says that no compatible OpenGL card could be found, which is incorrect, of course.

I’m looking forward to any helpful answers 😉
    Kind regards,
    Marius Shekow

    Open-GL
If you recently updated your Nvidia drivers try to roll them back to the version that worked.
If not, uninstall Nvidia’s drivers and install new ones.
Is your Open-GL plug-in installed in the right folder (sometimes people move it for troubleshooting)

    Cache:
    you can try to reset AE’s preferences;
    Hold CTRL+SHIFT+ALT while booting AE
Seems to fix a lot of errors

Some thing to try: (bizarre but it fixes quite a lot)
Create a new user in Windows and work in that user.
    maybe, just maybe …..

    cya,

    THANK YOU 🙂 !!!!

First of all, I did actually rename the OpenGL.AEX File, I dunno when and why, but it seemed to be a few months ago, shortly after I installed the CS3 suite.

Apart from that I must have been blind about the settings. I only looked at the first percentage value (“Maximum memory usage”) and forgot and somehow overlooked (O_o) the maximum RAM cache size which was set to 18,9 % (why did I enter that value back then? I dunno!) Now I’ve set it to 90% and I have not yet found a composition that is long enough for my system. Nucleo Pro rendered 30 secs of HD footage without problems.

Thank you all for your hints ! 😉

    SOLVED! I had this exact same issue today. AE CS5, Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit, Alienware M17x / 2.5 Core2 / 8GB / 1GB Nvidia card.
My RAM and audio previews were suddenly limited to 1 frame. I tried rebooting, clearing my preferences, and nothing worked until this article saved my neck…

All I had to do was boot into safe mode (hold F8 while booting), open and close After Effects, then boot normally. Problem solved, and I can do a RAM preview longer than 1 frame.
