  • RAM Preview play length…anyway to adjust?

Posted by Aaron Bear on July 9, 2007 at 5:36 pm

    Hello all,

I have a three minute video and with the work area at the beginning and end of the composition, the RAM preview will only do roughly 200-300 frames. So in order to preview the composition with audio I have to keep sliding the work area bar over to a different spot then re-RAM preview. Is there a way to adjust the setting or RAM preview the entire composition? …or perhaps Im using the method?

    More RAM will help 🙂

More RAM is about the only way to get more out of RAM Preview, and even then you’re limited by how much RAM AE can use (2GB or 3GB depending on your setup). CS3 may allow you to preview more if you have Multi-processing enabled for previews, I haven’t received my copy yet so I can’t tell you =(

I like to set my RAM Previews to start from the playhead, which doesn’t require moving the Workspace along the timeline, just the playhead.

Yea, I used to be able to get longer RAM preview times then I remembered that I used to drop the resolution quality down to half or third and that did the trick. In half resolution the RAM preview was over twice as long as full resolution and that did the trick.
    Thanks again!

You can also set it to skip every other frame, which will double your RAM Preview time again. I usually have the default numpad 0 set to do a full res preview skipping no frames, and shift-numpad 0 set to do a half res preview skipping every other frame. I use shift-RAM Preview to get a feel for the whole and then go back and RAM Preview specific parts that I want to check details on.
