  • RAM-preview (NumPad+0) not realtime since AE 7.0

Hello, are we only ones with this problem. I dunno if it’s a Io problem or else but… (posting to AE forum also).

Since After Effects 7.0, RAM-previews hasn’t been realtime anymore. sometimes framerate gets close to 25 fps (like 24,something) but not correct 25 frames/sec (we are working in PAL as you can guess). And we aren’t talking about any huge compositions here. If there’s like one or few solids animated it might get realtime but add a video track to comp and realtime is gone. AE 6.5 works fine, rock solid realtime 25 fps on same machines. So we have to do half rate RAM preview to see right animation timing witch sucks some times. And the problem is same on both Macs.

Setup is Dual 2GHz G5 macs with 4G RAM, TIger 10.4 OSX, Aja Io and Medea RTX SCSI-drives. After Effects 6.5 work but 7.0 and CS doesn’t.

    Anyone, help ?

There was an issue with Blackmagic Decklink cards a little while back… though you don’t have one, it seems. It had to do with setting the card prefs (in AE) to faster previews, if I recall. Ah, here we go:

“If you have a Decklink card, try setting your video preview pref to “faster”, and/or matching the 16:9 or 4:3 setting to your 16:9 or 4:3 comp format … all in the prefs.”

You may have a smiliar problem with the Io … can’t say, sorry.

Thanks for your reply, but no help. It’s already set to “faster” and Video Aspect Ratio setting isn’t helping either. Only way I can get realtime preview is uncheck “Mirror on computer monitor” option. Downside is that I loose comp viewer and all GUI elements (paths layer oulines etc.) it has during spacebar playback. Quite often useful to see.

I’m starting to think that this is somehow related to FireWire bus (’cause Io is connected via it). First I thought some conflict with EchoFire and uninstalled it no help. Now I haven’t even installed it for 7.0 or CS.

In a different direction, are you rendering in something beyond 8-bit (ie. 16 or 32 bit)? You won’t get real-time playback with either of these modes. Just a thought…

No,mostly 8-bit renders and comps. Video footage is mainly Apple Uncompressed 8-bit and renders 8-bit Blackmagic QTs.

And before someone says about aspect ratio correction button state, tried without help.

Can’t believe how no one else has this issue, we have it with both Macs (same setup although). Everyone else with Io fine ?
