okay so its been a while since i used after effects, but i am scratching my head as to why my ram previews are not running at anything like realtime. i was trying to preview a trapcode form audio react which i obviously needed to see at realtime, but was lucky to get 10fps on a PAL comp. so then i just tried a simple comp of a comp sized solid scaling down and was still getting around the same fps (9.6). I’m stuck. using ae cs4, with a 2x 3ghz quad macpro and 8 gigs of ram. have kona card disabled in preferences working on a single 30″ apple screen

    Indeed.

If that’s not it, maybe you have a Blackmagic card, and its previews are set to “more accurate”in the AE prefs? I think that was the culprit way back when. I could be wrong. Anyway, try setting it to “faster”. It makes no sense, but this is software we’re talking about.

Thanks to all your responses, after much hair pulling I decided to remove the AJA plugs from the plugins folder and deleted a few older plugins that had been around pre CS3! Not sure which of the plugs (or all of them) were the problem, but am now happilly have full 25fps ram preview without any stuttering even when using intensive plugs like Form and Particular.

I have a similar problem. I’m running a very new Mac Pro (8 x 2.66 GHz cores; 16 GB RAM) with CS4 Production Premium, FCS2 and a few other apps installed. I just did a completely clean install of this system last week – current OS, QT, all apps updated, etc. I have some plug-ins installed too (BCC6, most Trapcode, few Red Giant, Zax Invig Pro, etc.). This also has a AJA Kona LHe inside.

I’m getting horrible RAM previews of less than 10fps, fluctuating wildly. Could it be the AJA plug-ins for CS4? AE9 settings? This is awful – the opposite of what I expected from my new system.

Video preview with the Kona is turned off. Previews are set to Adaptive Res/OpenGL off. Multi proc is on with 2 GB RAM and 2 CPUs left for other processes. RAM preview is set to skip 1 frame. Trying to preview a 1080p, 29.97 fps comp of low complexity at quarter res. I’m getting about 8 fps!! This just doesn’t make any sense to me. I’ve never had any problems with RAM previews in 9 years of AE use. Please help, thanks, Brian
