RAM configuration for fcp on two cards for 2x dual core
hello,
i have a mac pro intel with two 2.6 dual cores.
i want to upgrade the memory for final cut pro from my current 4GB to probably 8GB. there are options for configuration and i am wondering. if i just installed 8 1gb dims would that be any different in performance than say 4 2gb dims? looks like apple recommends you keep pairs for one card the same as the other card. i assume thats in the same placement per card and the other remaining slots could be lower memory dims?i got i think, an odd ram dim set up on this computer right now. i was having problems so i yanked all the 512s and left just 2gb with on only one card for the meantime.
its 2 cards with 4 dims each:
A1 1gb
A2 1gb
A3
A4
B1 512mb
B2 512
B3 512
B4 512is this a bad configuration as it is? it looks odd.
im trying to optimize this for apples final cut pro for editing. they recommend matching sets to both cards as follows.
Final Cut Studio: For best performance on Mac Pro, install memory in risers symmetrically
though apple suggests the norm should be sets of 2 beginning on card A then alternating additional sets of 2 on each card so that card A always has the same or more if one card has more than the other. i realize the memory should always be sets of two and same make and model. mine is currently 4gb and i want to up that to 8.
maybe:A1 2gb
A2 2gb
A3 512
A4 512
B1 1gb
B2 1gb
B3 512
B4 512that make any sense?
or should B1 and B2 be same size as their partners a1 and a2?
is it preferable to have BOTH cards with equal ram configurations over card A having the extra memory if i cant fill up both cards equally.

Probably should post this in a Mac hardware forum. and apple.com has a good one.
I’ve always been at the mercy of my IT geeks when it comes to RAM. They buy the cheapest stuff.
Inquiries about RAM for FCP are not always based on good information. You may not receive any improvements in any applications as a result of what could be a significant expense.bogiesan
