I was wondering if I could get some advice on what the optimum settings are for my memory and openGL preferences.(yes I read the Common After Effects Questions (FAQ) on memory)

Specifically; Max memory usage, max ram cache size, disk cache, open GL and settings, for my system.

Here are the specs: Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2.66 GHz, 4 cores, 6 gigs of ram,
RadeonX1900 graphics card (replaced), Running AECS3 (AE says 3 gigs available)

I have never been able to get open GL to work. I thought the AECS3/intel combo would
fix it from the AE7 days, but when ever I enable open GL, it still crashes when I scrub the timeline.
    [error; AE_openGL:failed display color channel]
(All the “capabilities” in the open GL control panel say “supported”)

With 6 gigs of ram, Should I be at 100% on my memory settings?????

    Thanks for the advice. Bruce

PS. Multiprocessing says three additional cores

well, ‘3 additional processors’ means you are using all 4 cores, so if you cache settings are the default (max mem: 120%, max ram cache: 60%) you shouldn’t need to adjust your cache settings, and i wouldn’t recommend changing them unless you are having problems.

if you change back to the default settings and lose a core, try a max ram cache setting around 50%, that should give you around 1.5gb of ram per core, and you should be pretty happy. i will add that many people like having one core for doing other things (like surf the cow) while rendering, so sometimes limiting the cores for rendering can be useful, but that’s up to you…

i would probably also enable disk caching, the 2000mb (2gb) default is usually enough, but if you work in hd (or larger) you may want to increase that.

as far as opengl, you should be able to enable it if you have the latest update (8.0.2) for ae and a card that is on adobe’s list… however, if you enable opengl for previews ae will not use multiprocessing to render previews, they are not compatible renderers and the opengl render engine override the multiprocessing settings. with a 4-core mac, you’ll probably find that the multiprocessing is faster than opengl acceleration. opengl can only accelerate the render of blending modes, motion blur and about a dozen standard effects, multiprocessing will accelerate pretty much all rendering.
