  • raiding and “time machine”-ing in a mac pro….

Posted by Stefan Kroesbacher on November 28, 2008 at 9:05 am

    Hi all,

i’m finally on the way to upgrade to 10.5 on my mac pro 8core 3.0ghz with final cut studio 2.

the setup i have now is:
    1 System harddrive
1 Work-Drive with all the projects in it
    1 Raid0 Capture scratch HArd drive (2x250gb)

backup is going to external HD’s

    so, now…

i think of a raid for system and working, and a separate drive for backup with time machine.

    what’s the best configuration?
how does time machine do with large video files?

a raid 1 with 3 drives + time machine drive (how big?)?
    a raid 0 with 3 drives + time machine?
a raid 0 with 3 drives + sperate drive for project based backup without time machine?

    hm….

    any help highly appreciated!!

    cheers

Time Machine is not a good solution for pro apps and pro app media. I run Time Machine on my editing workstation and after using TM to Restore my system two months ago, it has been very unstable.

I would recommend running your RAID in RAID 5 or simply pick up a Drobo for your backup device. You can click on their banner link right here in the forum.

[stefan kroesbacher] “does leopard support raid5 with disk utility?”

No, there is no raid-5 software solution.

    No

The RAID Management software came with our ATTO R380 Host Bus Adapter. Any pre-configured RAID 5 box should come with the setup / management software.
