We’re converting to FCP. I’m looking at possibly getting a RAID system in one of our editors. I would like to see if you guys can give me any good options for a RAID in the 1.6TB range, other than the Apple XServe. I’m at a University, so a product that I can buy with educational price and/or no tax is a given. I’m looking to go with G-raid 800’s in one of the editors, but wanted something with more umph in our main suite.

Are you looking for SCSI or Fibre solution?
    Try medea.com or hugesystems.com
    They carry both.

    1. Apple offers education discounts. You’ve got to look harder. Your bookshop probably sells Apple hardware, even Boise State has an Apple dealership!
    2. Why do you think you need RAID? I ask because, after we’ve examined the issues, most folks end up realizing they don’t need a RAID at all.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I know I can get educational discount with apple…not a problem. I’m just wanting to exhaust all research at all other options. I look to get a fast RAID set-up because we look to add HD within the next couple years.

    Well,
If you want to do HD, you would definately want two U320 SCSI arrays or two (maybe one) Fibre Channel arrays. SCSI has a cost/GB benefit right now, but is (for the most part) strictly a one user solution.
Fibre Channel allows for centralized storage and allows for multiple users to access the same storage (similar to network attached storage).
Either solution can begin with one array for SD work and a second could be added later for HD or just more storage.
With the way storage prices fall, if you are just doing DV or SD work for now, I would just do a FW800 RAID for now. Buy your expensive HD storage when you buy your HD camera and deck. You’ll get more storagre and more speed for less $$$ then.
