RAID suggestions for Panasonic HVX-200/ FCP setup
Posted by Scott Pellet on March 31, 2006 at 7:27 amOk, I’m about to start working on a 95 minute indie feature and need some help. They are shooting on the new Panasonic HVX-200 (720p mode, 24p advanced, recorded onto the P2 card at 60 frames progressive, pulled down to 24 frames) and we will be editing with the latest version of FCP on a quadcore G5 with 4.5 GB RAM. My question is, what RAID array would you all suggest for this project? SCSI or fiber? bandwidth, etc.? They want to playback in full res if possible. Thanks.

March 31, 2006 at 4:13 pmNo RAID needed for 720p 24 DVCPro100. Just use a FW800 drive such as the GRAID. Data rate is minimal; something like 10MB/sec. Use the Digital Heaven Widget to calculate your storage requrements.

March 31, 2006 at 4:16 pmFW800 drives will work for you, but you’ll get minimal realtime functionality.

March 31, 2006 at 4:19 pmNo pull down is needed when recording to P2 Card. When you shoot 720p 24, you are recording exactly 24 frames. Just make sure you shoot at the correct settings.

March 31, 2006 at 5:27 pmThose settings are 720p24N (for native) to record the 24 discreet frames. There’s no 24p advanced in 720p.
Scott, i highly recommend you test any settings with that camera before you start shooting.

March 31, 2006 at 6:02 pmHi,
The most cost effective solution will be SATA (I recommend external SATA). I really like my Seritek (they also sell four port cards and four bay enclosures). The two drive solution is $257.95.
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Firmtek/SATA1SEN2/You can find quite a bit of information on external SATA solutions with reviews at these sites:

thats not exactly true, while FW 800 is fine for a single stream of 720p24,
The entire basis of working in HD with FCP really wants to have higher end storage. Faster arrays mean a number of things, more RT effects, more streams of realtime, faster compression, faster renders, smother playback – all do to the increase in bandwidth available.Remember that RT functions in Final Cut are directly related to how fast your machine and storage are.
Funny also — I do not see too many posts about fibre arrays that suck, but lots and lots of posts on FW drives that do.

March 31, 2006 at 11:39 pmWell said Gary – FW can suck. But there are alot more FW drives in use than fibre:)

April 1, 2006 at 3:49 amYeah, sorry, corretion: it’s 24p advanced native. I got the wrong info.–I just got that cleared up from them–I’m not a camera guy, I’m working in post. They’re not recording at 60 and doing pulldown.
Anything else problem-wise I can look forward to and/or avoid with this setup? I want the workflow, etc. to go smooth. Thanks.

maybe in the consumer/ DV video space, but not when we are talking about HD or share workflows.
Fibre and SCSI rule and have since the beginning. The FW 800 workflows are what, 3 years old?
whereas I have had fibre in my office for 6 years and scsi for over 12.We are talking about working in HD, not DV and everyone needs to respect that just because the signal can be passed over FW does not mean that is a professional way to work.
