I’m working for a small production company with 3 edit stations. Data is distributed across a dozen external hard drive. I think that we should upgrade to a NAS solution but I’ve never done that before. We need about 12TB of storage. If I understand correctly, I need to make sure that each client has 1G NICs, we need a 1GB network switch, and at least cat5e cable. I need to connect a NAS to one of the clients and make it accessible via the network. Is this correct?

Do you recommend any specific NAS enclosures?
What RAID do you recommend? We edit HD primarily with the occasional 4k. It’s rare for two editors to be working on the same project at the same time.

Should we use raid0 for speed or will the ethernet be a bottleneck? What would the backup workflow be like using raid0? Should we just archive projects to an external drive?

Should we use raid5 for redundancy without sacrificing too much space?

    Thanks!

If you’re going to run a 1GB network, I would recommend Cat6 cable over Cat5e. I’ve had problems using 5e in those scenarios.

To add to Bob’s list above, I’d throw in DDP – Dynamic Drive Pool. We just switched to them for storage last Fall moving away from our Apple XSAN and I really couldn’t be happier. It’s been easy to deploy, administrate, and maintain.

    Hi Ryan –
I take great offense to your blog post about “booth babes”.
I will let you know that I will be wearing a Speedo at the Maxx Digital booth, as we demonstrate Thunderbolt 2 based shared storage solutions with the Mac Pro. If you were nice, I would have let you grabbed my butt – but now – forget it !
