RAID question
Posted by Humberto Ramirez on August 15, 2007 at 6:11 pmI would like to partition a 500 Gig drive into two 250 Gig sections and set them as a RAID O set.
Would this make sense? Probably not, but thought of checking in with the experts.

August 15, 2007 at 6:25 pmSorry, but this makes NO sense whatsoever. Because a RAID is two or more PHYSICAL drives striped to act as one. So partitioning ONE drive into two parts, then trying to raid that…gets you nothing. In fact, it won’t work…won’t allow you to raid.
Again, you need two or more PHYSICAL drives to make a RAID.

August 15, 2007 at 6:30 pmRAID’s increase speed only when using separate drives. So it doesn’t make sense to do what you were saying.

August 15, 2007 at 11:52 pmYes I thought so.
G5s only have two drive bays ( who knows who thought of that brilliant design?) I will need a RAID card and RAID array. So far the second SATA 300 drive is proving to be very fast for editing.
Thanks again. -
