Raid or other storage solutions for FCP
Posted by Svein morten Hagen on November 29, 2011 at 10:45 pmHey there.
I´m looking for a harddrive solution for 1080 fcp editing and storage.
I want to work in my office but also bring the projects home so I can work evenings. I think a way of mirror also would be nice incase of harddrive breakdown. Can any of you smart guys help me?Jerry Hofmann replied 14 years, 5 months ago 4 Members · 5 Replies -

November 30, 2011 at 2:10 amWhich flavor of 1080 HD? HDV? DVCPROHD or AVCHD (which ends up being ProRes). I’d look at the fastest two drive array you can afford at least (you could make it mirror if you want, cuts capacity in half of course). CalDigit.com sells dandy setups, as do other folks out there. They’ll be fast enough if the media is compressed enough. ProRes 4:2:2 is what you want to be able to play at least I’d think.

Yes, Prores is what I will use. Do anyone have experience with a system where you can bring projects back and forth with you from the office so you can work on the same projects at home? -

November 30, 2011 at 4:05 pmMake sure your Project File and hard drive stay with you at all times. Don’t change any names and you should be fine.

November 30, 2011 at 5:55 pmThis is what I do for projects that I work on at both home and the office. I have an 2 arrays both with same name. 1 at home an 1 at the office. Both arrays have the same media and file structure. I then keep my project in my dropbox account which automatically syncs the file on both computers plus keeps a copy on “the cloud”.
You’ll have to rerender when switching computers, but everything else will stay the same. If you create a new graphic in AE or photoshop, then you’ll have to transfer those new files via thumb drive or, depending on size, dropbox and put them in the proper file structure of other array.
It’s not perfect, but works pretty darn good.

November 30, 2011 at 6:06 pmIf you move the project file with the media on an external drive, and have the same versions of FCP on both stations, you’re good to go… I’ve about 60 students right now doing just that.
