RAID fails to mount
Posted by Chris Gorman on December 4, 2009 at 9:23 pmA 2 drive RAID-0 had been working fine, but now it won’t mount. Disk Utility sees it and I could probably erase and re-raid it, but I want to look at what’s on it and recover any important files.
RAID-0 was formatted with Apple Disk Utility. Drives are in Sonnet Fusion 500 SATA enclosure.
Any suggestions?

December 4, 2009 at 9:29 pmIf Apple Disk Utility sees it you’re most likely in luck. Disk Warrior will probably fix it. If you don’t have Disk Warrior, do not pass go, do not collect 200 bucks, go run to your local Mac dealer and get it immediately.

December 4, 2009 at 9:48 pmI own disk warrior and use it frequently. However, I should have mentioned that disk warrior is not seeing this raid.

That’s not good Chris.
Could be that the power supply has gone south and is suddenly not providing the necessary juice. Is the power supply internal or external?

December 4, 2009 at 10:28 pmNew info: I checked it again after multiple tries with disk warrior. This time it sees something it calls “unknown disk”, and says “directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure (-36, 2268).
However, maybe it just means that the raid configuration/formatting or something is broken.
When I click on the hardward test, s.m.a.r.t. diagnostics in dw, it says the drive is functioning normally.
Other info in response to your comment about power supply – all the other drives in the same enclosure are working fine. I’m not sure which “power supply” you mean.

December 4, 2009 at 11:25 pmAgain, it does not sound good. It seems pretty clear that one of your drives went south.
Sorry, but for the most part, unless you have loads of dough to invest with a service who specializes in this type of thing, you will need to consider yourself hosed.
$1500 minimum is the going rate for companies who remove the platters and save the data onboard. For a two drive raid that cost is probably higher and the chance of success probably not nearly as good.

December 5, 2009 at 8:29 amThanks, that’s great info. I found a download for the mac version 1.3. Not sure if that’s the latest version.
I’ll try it after I get done with my current project, in a few weeks. I don’t want to risk installing anything right now when I have an important project in process.
