I’ve installed the X800XT into the G5. Love the fact that all the slots are still available. The card appears to work just fine without using the Radeon install CD that came with the card, so here is my question:

Is it necessary to install those third party utilities on the Radeon CD to get the maximum speed from the card in Motion, FCP, et al?

In general, I don’t like to install third party utilities if it isn’t necessary. It’s one of the reasons we have virtually no issues on our machines. I don’t care about speed in games, as we don’t use this machine for that, so I’d like to avoid installing these UNLESS it means the card will run slower in Motion, FCP, etc.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to enlighten us…

I had the x800xt installed for two days. It seemed to work well until I installed the latest Bios extender and the ATI Display Panel (version 4.5). Now my system won’t boot. I can’t even get the DVD to boot with the 800xt board in my system. When I put the orginal ATI 9600xt board back into my mac the system works fine. I’m waiting for Tiger and will format my hard drive and try again. A word to the wise….DON’T load any of the ATI Updates for the X800XT board.

More info can be found at this web page https://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/mac_X800_card_reports.html.
Do not flash your bios with the new one ATI has provided. You will end up with a $450 piece of junk. Many people including me cannot boot the computer after installing the new bios. The ATI reps insist no one is having problems with the board.

    Hi Robert,

I too have had the exact same issue. Ran the ROM update and now the system crashes every time I start. Completely killed my G5. I have even tried reinstalling Panther, but made no difference. I have too been following the info over on Xlr8yourmac. A guy from ATI posted to it saying “all seems to be ok now”!!!!!!!!! What? There are a lot of people who have this happen to them.

Stay well away from this ROM update. ATI have no intention of helping anyone it seems.

Mitch, I think there are a few advantages of installing the ATI Displays drivers (note: not the ROM update). I think the most important component in the ATI ROM Xtender file which goes in the system extensions folder.

I had version 4.4.4 of ATI Display drivers installed since I received my card and until I did this damn ROM firmware update, everything ran beautifully.

    Hi Robert,

Absolutly agree. What’s even more crazy is that this ROM update is still available on their site with the words, “This update is recommended for all RADEON X800 XT MAC EDITION cards.”

If others call ATI and get the, “no one else has this issue” response, along with Robert’s number, here is my ATI Support Ticket number, 737-797567.
