  • Radeon or NVIDIA? (card needed for a MacPro)

Posted by Joan Solsona on February 11, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Hi there, i have to buy a graphic card for my 2,66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro from 2007, because apparently my NVIDIA 256 MB card is old nowadays.
I need it for editing/postproducing Professional HD Video using Color, FCP and After Effects.

So, on the apple shop they gave me two choices:

    – ATI Radeon X1900XT 512 MB

    – NVIDIA Geforce GT (First Generation), 512 MB

I friend of mine told the best is the Radeon, but i need a second opinion… Could anyone help me please?

    Thanks in advance!

If you’re going to use Color the ATI cards are the best.

Even though Apple says the ATI Radeon 4870 card needs a late 2008 model Mac Pro if actually works in my late 2007 model. Have a look at the end of these 2 articles:

So, I would suggest getting a ATI Radeon 4870.

Hey Pasi, I am considering to replace my (early 2009 Macpro) Nvidia 8800 Gt card with the Radeon 4870 or the 4770. Can’t find the information if it will work with my two apple cinema 23” displays. Will I need and adaptor? Any light?

    thanks,

    Eduardo
