Radeon 5770 or 5870 for a 3.1 Mac Pro?
Since my workflow won’t change in 2014, I’ve decided to squeeze some more life in my old 3.1 Mac Pro for a smoother transition to the new tube, TB arrays, adapters and whatever. OWC offers two options to upgrade my current HD 4870, and they are the5770 and the 5870. There’s a price difference, and I’ve searched Barefeats test results before deciding. It seems the scores are equal for all tests on a 3.1 but a SmallLux GPU – OpenCL, where the 5870 performs much faster: https://www.barefeats.com/wst10g7.html

I have the 5770 upgrade in the same machine and it’s been running smooth for over a year.

In case you’re interested I’m getting a 7950 for my 3.1 Mac Pro tomorrow, barefeats suggest that it may actually be slower than a 5000 series in Motion, but I’m hoping that the new drivers in Mavericks will have improved performance.
I’ll be posting the results shortly!

I enquired OWC about the 7950 as a first option, but the technical dept. answered it was not going to work on the early 2008 MP and suggested to go for the 5870. If Barefeats tested it, then it should work.Fabrizio D’Agnano

That’s not true, there are plenty of reports that it works on the 2008 MP. Will hopefully confirm it tomorrow!

I only had a 4870 so yes! timeline scrolling and operation is quicker, no lag at all on playback, 4K XAVC is handled better. I do have an issue with 4K footage in PPro CC though, there’s a screen distortion when the playhead is paused.

I put a 3gig 7970 in my 3,1 tower. HUGE increase in speed/performance over the original nvidia card that came with my machine.
I was also on the fence whether or not to upgrade to the new MacPro, but with this card I feel I am good to wait until the 2nd generation of the Tube-Pro.
