Radeon 4870 + Quadro 4000 configuration in ‘Nehalem’ Mac Pro – is this possible?
I’m trying to configure my Mac Pro for DaVinci Resolve.
According to the Blackmagic configuration guide, they recommend a Radeon 4770 + Quadro 4000 configuration for a Mac Pro.
My Mac Pro (model 2009 Nehalem) is NOT recommended for use with the Radeon 4770. Having looked around, apparently it runs fine (even Blackmagic say it’s fine), but it has been know to cause fans in my model of Mac Pro to spin loudly. I’d like to avoid this issue.
The 4870 apparently runs just fine in my Mac Pro, however it is not one of the cards recommended by Blackmagic.
Does anyone here know if the configuration of Radeon 4870 for GUI + Quadro 4000 for DaVinci will work ok? Or, should I just stick with the Radeon 4770 + Quadro 4000?

I do not see where there would be any problem with that card, it is just for the GUI in Resolve and it is a fairly fast Mac video card.

There are also utilities that you can install (such as smcFanControl) to control the fan speed in your Mac. (There are different ones for different models, so look around.) smcFanControl not only lets you have better control over your fans but also give you an ongoing read out of your Mac’s temperature so that you can manually override it, if necessary.

Cards are 5770 and 5870 respectively. Sorry, complete brain slip.

I was under the impression that the recommended ATI card was the 5770.

You run out of power plugs. 5770 and Q4000 use one each, you only have 2 so that works.
5870 needs 2 all by itself.
