Hello. In May I’ll be directing and editing a 5min short film (fb/giftfromgodfilm). My plan for editing is very simple: to import the RAW .r3d files into Vegas Pro 12 timeline, edit the raw settings to get the basics down, and then color in Magic Bullet Looks (I don’t have the money or resources for much else).

Would you say this is a sensible way to edit and color? (considering limited resources).

NB The last time I did a project this way, I experienced some very slow & crashing rendering to 1080. This particular edit was 2.5 minutes long but had a tonne of effects etc.

My PC computer has an i7 3770K processor with 16GB of 1600 RAM. Win 7 64bit. The graphics card is a GeForce GTX650.

Editing should be fine, since you can edit with 1/2 or even 1/4 resolution previews. The rendering will take some time, but workable – it depends on how much you have going on.

Just keep your source footage drive separate from your project/preview/temporary renders drives. If the source drive can sustain about 200 MB/s you should be okay. This means either two 7,200 drives in RAID 0 (Won’t recommend this) or a 512 GB SSD, minimum. A five minute project might have an hour or two of footage.

Additionally, check out the Premiere Pro CS6 creative cloud solution – you could lease for a couple of months and have access to all software. Nothing wrong with Vegas, though.

    All the best.
