  • R3D Decode Settings And Rendering

Disclaimer: I’m definitely guilty of asking too much of a single GPU mac Resolve with no Red Rocket card.

I jumped knee deep into a short shot on RED at 5K. I graded the film with source decode set to Quarter Res. I never expected to get anywhere near realtime playback, but am hoping to render out a final grade sequence at 1080 where we repo’d from the 5K files.

I’m now ready to render out and switched decode settings to Full Res.I am getting the Powerhouse Decode Error which I see in the archives has been discussed here. A few posts mention that they did not think the decode settings effected the renders only the playback. I was hoping to confirm if this is true or not.

If it does effect renders then it sounds like my best bets are to either break up the film into smaller chunks and see where I can get away with switching to Full Res decode or spend a chunk more money on hardware.

    Thanks, Chris

You could try putting in a beefier card. The gtx 570 with 2.5 ram… or the 580 with 3gb ram might be a good choice. You can use the PC verion on the mac with the latest drivers. The 590 won’t work on the mac due to power issues… and the 580 classified edition will not work either also due to power. If you could wait a few weeks… the 6xx series is expected. They would give you a better performance/power consumption ratio.

Thanks Juan. I was hoping someone could still confirm if these decode settings do effect the renders or if it just is relative to playback.

I can live with it set at Quarter Res is it’s just relative to playback. If it does in fact effect renders then I’ll need to address…

It affects the renders. Sorry… I missed that question.

Found my answer in BM user manual (not always the case)…

“The decode quality will have a direct impact on the performance of the system, so you may want to grade in a resolution which provides real-time playback, then use the config settings to switch to a higher quality/resolution for rendering.”

Could always render out a single shot to test. Computing is all about experimenting.

In my experience, this “power house” error will result in black frames.
I have yet to find a solution that will kill this problem once and for all.

Ryan, that is exactly why I posted the question – I cannot do a test because as soon as I switch to full res decode the system locks up and I cannot render out.

I see. So did you have any luck by trying it the way the manual instructs? I’m going to play around with that tonight because I have some R3D projects in my near future. So you are just working away in whatever quality then in the config tab you are changing something for render-only?

hm, i do it all the time. grading in half or quarter res and render out 4k, 3k or hd full… (double gtx480 setup here).

but i do remember having this errorcode once… (8.0 i would guess!)
