I realize that we’re all going to have bite the bullet sooner or later (or have I already clamped down with my molars? I love the taste of cordite in the morning!) And due to lack of development on apple’s part and the need to get us out of the 8 bit world, and this is probably related to the AE issue in 2018 R15.03 and above, but I really miss the low mB files made by QT animation best (we do a lot of matte passes that are mostly either black or white).
Is there a way to get these codecs back? Is there another codec that runlength encodes? (on PC Win 7)

Every windows system ships with the Microsoft RLE codec by default. Never touched it in my life but in theory it is literally just a run length encoder. That said, I never render to animation formats anymore. png does a good job at blocks of colour.

The problem is PNG only “Run length encodes” along the length of the pixels in one frame, whereas QT is doing for the length of the clip.
For us the difference is 6GB vs 136kB files. Ah, progress!
