  • Quicktimes appearing in Finder as Documents

I have a mysterious problem, I’ve never seen before.

Some HDV footage was captured for me (on another system) and brought to our suite. All the Quicktimes in the Capture Scratch folder appear as simple Documents in the finder, and FCP will not recognize them (“File Error…”). Uh oh .. I thought.

YET – the files are the right sizes (many gigs) and WILL open up in Quicktime (both 7 and 10) and play just fine.

The Get Info about the file suggests that it is a text document and defaults to wanting text editor to open it with (although by default – as I said – QT opens them). I tried changing this to FCP but FCP still does not recognize the file.

I found that I can use SAVE AS in Quicktime 7 to save a new Quicktime – which then DOES open in FCP, but since I have hundreds of files, and can only do this one at a time – this is not a viable solution.

So I tried Compressor – thinking that I could batch convert the files – but Compressor does not recognize the original files either.

    FCS3 and SL (both systems).

Any ideas most gratefully received ….

Try MPEG Streamclip for a batch conversion. google it, it’s free.

Use Automator to add a .mov extension.
