August 6, 2009 at 10:11 pmThis thread now contains so much bullshit that i’m not capable to comment on anymore, as i want to go to bed within an hour.
(And if this sounds insulting to some of the posters, no worries, it was intended that way. I’ll pick up the fight tomorrow.)

Pleasant dreams Bouke.

August 7, 2009 at 7:01 amIf the target systems (either Mac or PC) all have the latest QuickTime version installed on them (or can be upgraded to the latest) then they will all be able to read a ProRes copy of your edited spot. They won’t have to download anything else as ProRes decode is already a part of the latest QuickTme.
There is also the option of purchasing and installing the necessary decode codecs on these other systems so that you can distribute and they may read a native XDCAM EX quicktime. For example: https://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QXD.asp

John,
That’s cause Zelin is a sissy who intends no harm….Shane:
Uncompressed ‘should’ work on any PC with QT installed, IF the default Apple Uncompressed is used.
However, there are a lot of flavours on Uncompressed, as a lot of hardware vendors make their own ‘uncompressed’variant, and that will get you in trouble if you use that.
Besides, there are Gamma issues using Uncompressed. (I do not know for sure if that is also the case with ProRes, but i bet a box of beer it is.)John,
Animation and Photo-Jpeg also got Gamma issues. Besides, if you advice Animation, also advice to set it to 75%, more is overkill as it creates 4:4:4 files at 100%Andy,
Avid codecs, gamma issues.
Except the MpegII codecs, but those are not in the free codec package.Alex,
My advice:
XDcam codecs seem not to suffer from gamma issues, are compact and free, and come with Avid.
For those who cannot deal with that, just give them a tape.Bouke

Alex what quicktime codec should I use so that all other editors can use the spot …?
Bouke Have the lesser gods install the free codecs available from Sony and you should be good. You got a link for these free quicktime codecs from Sony?

Come on Andy, take one for the team! 🙂
Actually I hadn’t noticed a gamma issue going from UC 10bit to Avid DV50, but
I was looking at Avid file in another facility, so it is possible. -

Mea Culpa, that should be ‘Will’As for checking Gamma issues:
My trick is to create (or aks the one that wants to deliver files to me) a small QT with three vertical bars, pure black, grey (123, 123, 123) and pure white.
(whatever anyone thinks that should be pure black and pure white)With any half decent waveform it’immediatly clear if you have gamma issues or not, and how to compensate for it, as well as compensate for RGB vs StudioRGB vs YUV levels.

Sony codecs come with Avid, and for FCP you have to install the XDcam tranfer application. From memory, they come with that.

August 7, 2009 at 12:17 pmNope, sadly not that simple Bouke. The XDCAM Quicktime codecs come with FCP, they’re not part of anything you can download legally for free from Sony or anyone else as far as I know. There is always the option of exporting the finished edit via XDCAM Transfer and rewrapping as an MXF in the process. Then that file could be handed off to the PC guys and gals.
