  • Quicktime with AC3 ?

I’m doing post for one hour long documentary, which was shot in HDV and we already have 5.1 channel AC3 soundtrack for DVD release.

Documentary will have its premiere in a movie theater that has digital cinema projector and we would like to show it in fullHD and surround sound.

Theater does not have blu-ray player and the producer does not want to buy all software and hardware to make and show blu-ray movie for just one premiere, so I’m gonna playback documentary out of my MacPro.

What would be the best way to make and playback a file with HD picture and AC3 sound?
I also have discrete uncompressed sound tracks, so if I make a quicktime movie with these, can MacPro encode them on the fly to AC3 to stream out through optical output?

    Hi Toke,
I know nothing about HD projectors (IN, OUTs, etc) so just to say something. If the projector has HDMI, I would play the HD master from the MacPro through my AJA ioHD.

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

BTW, Quicktime 7.4.5 breaks AC3 playback, specifically using the Perian 1.1 plugin. Stay with Quicktime 7.4.1.

But again can you connect your optical out to movie theater audiosystem? I would gues no!
Cal to theater and talk with them.
