Perhaps this isn’t a Vegas question – but – is dealing with default render settings for making Quicktime and WMV files.

If I render a WMV and MOV files w/same basic settings (oh lets say a 512k files) how come when compared to the WMV version the quicktime version (MOV) looks so bad? Much more pixelation, blurring, etc. File sizes of each are comparable if not almost the same, but the MOV file looks – well – shitty in comparison.

Is there some setting somewhere I’m missing that should be changed from the default that will make a comparable mov to it’s wmv equivalent compression rate/file size???

If you look under ‘custom’ on the QT 512 template you will find under the video tab it is set to 50% for quality. Set this to max and you will see your quality improve, mind you so does the file size! The WMV codec works slightly differently it has a smoothness>sharpness setting which defaults at 90%. Overall these days we deliver most encoded media for streaming on the web as WMV as it is gaining more popularity and size for size its quality seems to be better than MOV. Mind you if you produce MOV’s with Sorenson Squeeze v4.0 you will get smaller than normal QT’s and they look very good.

I tried it out – and got it – thanks for the tip.

Sorenson Squeeze is superb. I made comparable templates for what I was using in Vegas. Sorenson Squeeze makes smaller and better looking files for BOTH MOV and WMV files.

Now I have QUITE the project to redo everything on my site to not only make all the files look and sound better . . . . BUT be smaller and take up less bandwidth. HUGE issue for websites like mine that have alot of video material and in excess off 1000 unique visitors a day!
