  • Quicktime stutter / reload?

For months we’ve been having an issue with loading AE-rendered QTs back into AE projects and seeing random stutters – and in some cases, major playback issues.

Example #1: a comp gets rendered out, and brought back into AE (instead of pre-comping) to save time. But some frames repeat themselves, stuttering playback. The problem is fixed if you File > Reload Footage. However the problem reappears often, and the footage must be reloaded before every RAM preview and render.

Example #2: same scenario – a QT brought back into AE for use in a comp. This time however, every few frames are duplicated, creating the effect of a low-FPS playback, very jittery. Reloading the footage does not help. Viewing the file in QT Player or FCP reveals no problems, it plays smoothly. But AE won’t play it smoothly, and this even carries through to the renders, making the clip useless.

These issues persist no matter how many different codecs, frame rates, and resolutions we try. It’s become debilitating, and a perusal of the boards don’t reveal anyone else having these problems (which seems bizarre, this is a core problem). We have encountered the same issues on every Mac in the building. We are running the most current versions of OSX, QT, and AE.

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi guys,

Having a very similar problem here, only we’re a multi-platform facility (PC-MAC), and it is interesting that when we load the offending quicktime renders into a different software (Digital Fusion), we don’t have the held-frames issue…

As you said, it is debilitating. Quicktime bug? AE bug? Anyone?

Yes it seems to only happen in AE.

Glad to hear I’m not crazy. Maybe the problem will be gone in version 7, but maybe not. I really want to track this issue down, it’s killing productivity. Spent double the time this week just rendering over and over until the stuttering was gone. >:(

How did the problem go away? Did you not-use-any-compression-at-all? We’ve had a similar problem when rendering TGA sequences too…

The problem doesn’t really go away. We just keep re-loading the footage and then render again. Eventually one render won’t stutter.

This happens no matter what codec or output method we use.

    That’s so scary… Anyway, I’m trying not to pre-render anything…
