Hi, I’m trying to compress my movie edited in 1080i HDV to the h.264 iPod video 640×480 setting.

I’ve done this many many times exporting directly from FCP to compressor (please don’t yell at me – I know this is wrong – alright fine yell).. I have read that it is better to:

    1. make a quicktime reference movie
    2. open that in compressor
    3. render (compress) into the correct format

When I do that it messes with the aspect ratio (making it even wider) any suggestions?

    J

Your video needs to be 640×360 (not 480) to keep the 16:9 aspect ratio. Go to the Geometry Button and set the Dimensions (encoded pixels) to 640×360 and you should be good to go.

There is nothing wrong with Export?Using Compressor from FCP, it takes longer and ties up FCP but it gives you the best results, so if you have the time go right ahead on do it.
