I’m having a problem with some .mov files not playing correctly. To give you some background I recently got a new pc with xp-64 bit and I’m running CS3 Production Premium. I have the most current version of Quicktime installed and have it set to use legacy codecs as well. The problem is that about 1/4 of my .mov files aren’t playing and thus are not showing up in AE. The file is there but nothing happens.

When I play the file outside of AE using the QuickTime player I get this error message: “Additional software is required for QuickTime to playback this media. It may be available from the QuickTime Components page. Make sure your internet network connection is active, then click the Continue button to check for the software.”

It then opens the 3rd party components page but doesn’t tell me which component I need. I have downloaded and installed all the codecs from this page but I am still having the same problem. Any advice?

    Thanks

In Quicktime (pro at least, I don’t know about standard) if you open up the Movie Inspector (Window: Show Movie Inspector, or command+I), under format it should tell you what codec the movie uses.

if you were able to view these same files on your older system, then you may have had some other codecs (components) installed on that system, possibly as part of another software package (like an nle) or third-party hardware (like an aja or decklink card).

hopefully the movie inspector could tell you what the missing codecs are, you can often download at least the read only codecs for free, or pull them off your old system… though you should be aware that old qt components can be problematic with ae…
