Quicktime HD video blank
Posted by Peter Malof on January 26, 2008 at 3:46 amA friend gave me some HD Quicktime footage (exported from Final Cut). It shows up as blank white video (the audio plays fine) with both the latest Quicktime Pro player and PP2. I must be missing a codec or something? Anyone know how I can get this video to work in PP? I can’t find much on this issue either here or on the greater web. FYI — the footage came from a Mac (with no extension) so I added “.mov” (and tried every other extension I could think of as well). Thanks!

January 26, 2008 at 5:01 amIf this doesn’t play in your PC Quicktime, then there is a problem with the QT file. Ask them to resupply it using export quicktime conversion, not movie.
– Jon 🙂How many editors does it take to change a light bulb?

January 26, 2008 at 3:35 pmThanks Jon. I may not be able to coax him into re-exporting, since he seems convinced it’s a good file (and it’s big). Browsing elsewhere I see others with similar problems (particularly HD QT) who say you need Final Cut installed to play the file if it was created with Final Cut. That makes me think maybe it needs a proprietary codec or something. But I’ve sent the filmmaker your suggestion; maybe it’ll work… Peter

February 1, 2008 at 5:43 pmI’m having the same problem. If I install the BlackMagic 10-bit codec it works.
I read that yes, it is a codec that comes with Final Cut that allows it to export/play those files on a mac (if Final Cut in installed), but won’t work on a PC. Blackmagic is the only codec (and free) that I found to work with it, although I don’t understand codecs that well and wonder if:
A) I had Premiere pro cs3 if it would work (I have cs2 right now)
B) if using the codec hurts the video quality any?
Anyone else maybe know?

February 1, 2008 at 7:38 pmInteresting. Sorry I can’t answer your questions. But can you tell me where to get this codec? And are there any special installation tricks to get Premiere to recognize it?

February 1, 2008 at 8:20 pmBah, I posted the above reply awhile ago, didn’t see that it actually “took” the message, so I made a new thread about it….oh well, hopefully the new thread might get some extra attention.
Anyways, https://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/software/
go there. On the right “side bar” you will see the top of that sidebar has an “entry” that says, “Blackmagic Codecs,” under which you can click your operating system. Click whatever, install them. Then, you should be able to play the files on quicktime or in premiere IF you’re problem is in fact the same as mine.
Good luck. Interested in knowing if that works for you.

February 5, 2008 at 11:32 pmThanks Andrew. I haven’t had time to try this until today. Blackmagic seemed to install okay, but, alas, the clip still is blank white in both Premiere Pro and Quicktime Pro, even after rebooting. If you or anyone else has other ideas I’d love to hear them! (I’m not supposed to do anything to get QT or Premiere to recognize the new codecs, am I?) THANKS, Pete

February 6, 2008 at 6:39 pmI’ve had a similar problem myself. I suspect the file was exported from FCP using Apple’s ProRes 422 codec. Unfortunately, there isn’t a Windows flavor of this codec. A lot of Macs don’t have it either. I think you need to have the latest version of FCP to have it. I haven’t found a work around short of re-exporting the file from FCP using a compatible codec. You can check to see how the file was encoded with Gspot — a freeware program.

June 30, 2009 at 7:17 pmQT files captured with Final Cut Pro 5, Exported from Final Cut Pro 5, or saved in Quick Time Pro do not play on other MAC’s. Why? The files appear to be ok they play ok on my computer and they play on others computers in VLC.
Why?
Thank you .
