I’ve been using Final Cut for a few years but this one thing keeps popping up and is a very time-consuming problem. When I import a quicktime file into the timeline, why does Final Cut need to render the file? It can cost me a lot of time when deadlines are tight. Is there a quick answer or am I going to have to deal with it?

Because the format does not exactly match the sequence format. Could be scale, frame rate, codec, etc.

For example if you put a 30fps qt in a 29.97 sequence you’ll have to render. Common rookie mistake. Just an example.
