I have been using Visualhub to do this but I wondered if any other software can do it. mpegstreamclip, compressor and QTpro do not do it…at least I could not find the settings.

When transcoding to h.264 how can I limit the finished file size to under 500 megs???

The reason is many of the online video hosting services have a 500meg limit.

File size is very much related to data rate.

Scratches head, isn’t this common sense?
kbits/second is size when you know the total number of seconds. Of course there’s some variance especially with VBR encode as one may over or under shoot a bit but you can certainly get very close.

Craig is spot on but if you still need the facility I seem to remember that Cleaner from Autodesk can limit to filesize but don’t expect it to get it exactly right down to the last bit.
