    Hi all,
I’ve looked through all the search results that have mentioned this problem but there has been no real explination.
Since I recently re-installed After Effects after re-installing Windows XP pro, I’m getting the ‘Error allocating Quicktime Handle’ during every other render. Re-starting my machine fixes the problem for the next render but the next one will fail every time.
The project I’m working on involves hundreds of renders and the time I am wasting re-starting my machine means I’m probably not going to make my next deadline and could potentially cost me a lot of money.
So what I am saying is, does anyone know a definitive reason behind this problem? Most of my comps don’t even include plugins and are under 10 seconds in length.
Or should I finally give up on Windows once and for all and switch to Mac?

    Cheers,
    Phil

Try downgrading your Quicktime back to 6.5. There should be a link on the apple site.

    Hope that helps,
    Steve

That is not the answer to your problem, but maybe you should do that anyway since it sounds like you are already convinced that one platform is “better” than the other.

If you search various forums and the web, you will find that the various bugs/problems with QT7 are pretty well documented, unresolved thus far, and apply to both platforms. I would take Steve’s advice and go back to QT 6.5.2 until Apple straightens out QT7.

In case you can’t tell by my comments, I work cross-platform all day every day and can tell you first hand that switching platforms (in either direction) is not the answer to any problem other than user familiarity. Just my 2 cents.

I worked with both platforms (mostly Mac) for many years with my previous employer. I’m currently working on Windows only and from my own experiences, I have found Macs to be much more stable during AE previews and renders. Of course this isn’t a universal observation, and the comment in my previous post was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek in a “Deadline fast approaching and I’m about to throw my PC out of the window after tearing my hair out” kind of way. If I had already decided Macs were ‘better’, I wouldn’t have bought my PC. Anyway, Downgrading to QT 6.5 unfortunately hasn’t solved the issue but I’ll keep trying. And take my PC away from the window 😉

Try Defragging the drive that your source files are on. That worked for me.
Windows (maybe MAc too) seems to get fragmented when using Quicktime movies in AE. But then again I’ve had the same problem with sequinces…..aaarghhghh! Why does AE mess up your dard disk so much?
