quicktime conversion tool
Posted by Philip Hibberd on October 28, 2009 at 1:05 pmI’m exporting out of FCP5 using the quicktime conversion tool. The exported file has additional frames at the start and sometimes at the end. They are not present in my timeline.
HDV 50i sequence
Exporting animation mov.I dont have this problem with compressor. I know I should just use compressor cuz it’s better, but I was being lazy.

October 28, 2009 at 4:52 pmMight have something to do with HDV and its long GOP structure, or something. Have you experienced this with other formats?

No I haven’t experienced this with other formats, but I mainly work in that format. My first thought was GOP aswell but I can’t see why only the export quicktime conversion tool would do this and not compressor.
It’s done it a few times on 30 sec clips and some longer clips. One occasion it added a few frames just before a transition (fade to black using opacity handles)Any suggestions before I boycott this tool and just use good ole compressor.

October 28, 2009 at 11:46 pmMy only overall recommendation would be to work in ProRes (transcode/load HDV as) from now on, but are you also mastering out to HDV?

If you export quicktime movie (self contained) rather than quicktime convert, you can change the codec. Is there a reason for Animation codec?

October 29, 2009 at 9:29 pmI hear you. Upgrade time. I was exporting animation cus I needed an uncompressed format to transfer to AFX on a PC. I could have exported image sequence I guess.
The PC doesn’t have quicktime pro so no sony HDV 50i codec. I have found an older QT version to play sony HDV 50i on the pc but AFX hates that version of QT (random white frames in any export)
