When I export from Avid as either a QT Reference or a QT Same as Source, my resulting quicktimes don’t play in Quicktime. They either freeze QT or cause that ambiguous “Quicktime is missing software…” error. I’ve uninstalled QT and reinstalled (7.1.6) and same with the Avid Codecs LE 1.60.

Understandably, After Effects doesn’t play them either–shows them with white screens. I’m doing all my work on the same PC. And I’m not even exporting from a timeline–just subclips from a bin–so mixdowns aren’t relevant. Other specs:

Avid Xpress Pro 5.7.2 working in DVCPro HD (HD1080i/60)

Quicktime Pro 7.1.6 (downgraded from 7.2 which wasn’t working either)

    After Effects 6.5.0.97

    Windows XP 2002 SP2

I had no luck on the Avid forum so was hoping someone in the Cow could shed some light.

The AE “white screen” is indicative of a missing codec.
Possibility that the Avid QT codecs have become corrupted, moved, deleted…
Check the C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTComponents folder to check to see if you have the Avid qt components (they will all have Avid in the filename). You can download the latest Avid codecs from Avid’s support site and install them.

Which by the way can be found at:

Along with an explanation for each AVID codec. Download at bottom of page.

Right, I’ve installed that LE 1.60 package twice now and with no success in fixing the problem.

If it helps, inside my QTComponents folder are the following:
    AvidAV1xCodec
    AvidAVd1Codec
    AvidAVdnCodec
    AvidAVdvCodec
    AvidAVjiCodec
    AvidAVpkCodec
    AvidAVuiCodec

Does that match what you all have? Anything missing?

Your problem is that you’re using DVCPro HD, which is a Mac only codec. Avid recognizes it and will allow you to edit with it, but you can’t export same as source and expect to see it anywhere else on your PC. Quicktime will show a white screen, AE will show a white screen, etc…because it’s not a PC codec.

You can check out Raylight’s DVCPro HD decoder here:

    Raylight Decoder

Download the trial and export again. Once this program is installed it should allow your PC to read the codec so you can use it in other applications. I just had this issue with a friend this weekend–he was working on DVCPro HD footage on a Mac in AE, then had to take it to his PC at home. This solved it for him (he was getting the white screen like you). If it works, I think it’s only $95, which is cheap enough.

    Michael.

I’m running Xpress Pro on an intelMac (mac book pro) and am having the same problem! I posted this on the AJA Kona forum, having stumbled upon the issue there. QT works fine with every codec except DVCpro HD: The Meridien codecs are white, the DV100 codec play back incorrectly (field dominance and frame rate problems), although export from QT works with an exported same as source file (original: DVCpro HD 1080 50i/25P, camera: HVX 200). The rumor I’ve heard is that there are MacIntel codecs for DVCpro HD that Avid either A)never had or B) will have to come up with eventually. Mac’s DVCpro HD codecs for FCP work fine, but Mac has not written any for Avid as far as I know (why should they?) I’ve also heard that Panasonic has downloadable codecs (or QT components) for IntelMacs somewhere (but I have yet to find anything like it on their website) The LE 1.60 codecs from the Avid site do not help either! I’m guessing that QT needs some component that I cannot find…

anybody know the answer to this? Help much appreciated.

    mac book pro/ 2.4 /Xpress 5.7.5/ QT 7.2
