  • Quicktime 32 on Vista Ultimate 64?

    Hello.

My old machine crashed hard, and so Dell replaced the box (nice). So I figured, I have a new machine, why not go 64 bit?

I bought 8GB of RAM, and then got a copy of Vista Ultimate 64 bit, and installed it on the new Dell T3400. Then I downloaded and installed Vegas 8.1 right from the Sony site.

I played with some .avi files just fine, but then when I went to drag some .mov files onto the timeline, Vegas would not let me do it. It said I needed Quicktime first (Oh, yeah. That’s right). It also gave me a link (https://www.apple.com/quicktime/download).

I downloaded QuickTime with ITunes, and then went to install. However, it warned me that I was about to install 32-bit Quicktime on a 64-bit system, and then recommended that I get 64-bit Quicktime. I then searched for 64-bit Quicktime, but could not find it, so I called Apple, and they said no 64-bit Quicktime exists (so why did they recommend that I get 64-bit Quicktime?).

I am presently imagine my C-drive, and plan to try installing the 32-bit Quicktime, to see if it works. However, is there a better alternative, or a known workaround?

If that does not work, can I install 8.0c on the Vista Ultimate 64-bit OS? Or do I need to install a dual-boot configuration (Bootcamp or whatever), and then boot into 32-bit Vista with Vegas 8.0c?

Has anyone else faced this issue? And has anyone successfully overcome it? It would be nice to use the 64-bit Vista, since I already paid for it, and since I already got all that RAM.

    Thank you.

    Hi guys.

    Update.

I am not sure if I messed up, or what, but while QuickTime installed, ITunes said it did not install. Then I went to open some .mov files in 8.1, and it would not go, so something was wrong with QuickTime.

I tried to download again, just to see what would happen, and this time there was a 64 bit installer for ITunes 8 (upper left hand corner of https://www.apple.com/itunes/download). The file is iTunes64setup.exe. Is this brand new, or did I just miss it before?

    I am installing it now.

    It works!

Quicktime 64 is out. So far so good.

I won’t make any more posts on this unless I hit some bugs.

    Hi
Glad it’s working for you so far. However you mentioned BootCamp above in configuring a dual boot system.

You mentioned Dell and Vista! Those are PC. Boot Camp is a MAC program and you use it on a MAC so you can make a dual boot system and be able to boot into Windows. Mac is Intel based now so both OS-x and XP/Vista will run on a Mac. Boot Camp wouldn’t do you any good on a PC; It installs Mac drivers on the Windows side. AFAIK

Let us know how you get on with QT64 Norman.

I’m in a similar situation but generally don’t use QT files in Vegas.

I do however have both Vegas8.0c(32bit) and Vegas8.1(64bit) running happilly on my new Dell m6400 laptop side by side (Vista64 Ultimate)

I’ve not had much of a chance to test them severely yet but so far all is good.

One thing I did notice was that after loading vegas I lost all the DX plugins for a previously successfully loaded SoundForge8 and haven’t been able to access them or my Noise Reduction software since.

    Hi Allen.

Thanks for letting me know about Boot Camp. Good to know.

If I have problems with 8.1, or if I cannot get my other 32-bit apps to work (DVD Architect, Boris Red, etc), do you know what program I would use to install a dual-boot on a PC?

    Thank you, and Shalom.

    Hi Alan.

I will try to let you know. I have about a dozen irons in the fire, so it might be a week before I get a chance to really dig in and test anything out good.

Thank you for telling me that I can install 8.0c alongside of 8.1. I would be very interested to know how things go for you with X64, and also with your other 32-bit apps.

    Thank you,

    Norman

Vista gives you a dual boot option all by itself. I’m running Vista 64 Ultimate alongside of XP Pro while I ensure all of my essential editing apps will run in Vista 64, which BTW, everything works so far except for Ultimate S 4 won’t run in Vegas 8.1. I’ve installed the 32 bit version of Vegas also, so that’s not a major problem for now.
I’m about to install QTPro in Vista 64, so I’ll be going down the same path you took with that. Thanks for the info on it.
