When outputting from Final Cut Pro I’ve been using Quick Time Conversion. A five minute clip is almost 2 GB. How can I output it compressed so that it’s much smaller?

A WHOLE LOT of things. Choose a different codec, smaller frame size, lower data rate. Lots of options. Export via Compressor and check out the presets (look at QT 7 streaming and Download)…or export a QT reference movie (File>Export>QT Movie…not QT conversion)…

And what are you outputting to/for? As Shane said, there are a lot of options, and they get narrower when you know where the video’s going.

I’m making a fundraising trailer to show what I’ve been doing with my documentary. It doesn’t need to be super high quality and I do need to be able to upload it on youtube. Unfortunately I’m a Final Cut Pro novice, so I don’t know how to change the codec, frame size, or data rate when exporting. Compressor is something I’ve never used. I’m using Final Cut version 6.0.5 and version 7.5.5 of Quicktime Pro.

    Dave,

if you give me a few more details, I might be able to send you a step by step

what was the documentary shot on? how did you capture it? and what are your timeline settings?

another thing, how long is the piece you are trying to export?

    peace

This tutorial has everything you need to know about going from FCP to YouTube. The 2nd one has just been updated for HD.

I appreciate the offers of assistance. I signed up for One-on-One at the Apple Store. While they’ve been helpful everything they’ve told me to try ends up one of two ways: a huge file that comes out 16×9 or a smushed 4×3 that’s a small file. The footage was shot using Panasonic P2 and converted to Quick Time using Raylight. I’d like to output to upload onto Youtube and possibly also use it as a promotional tool. So I’d like to know how to make one that’ll be fine with a higher resolution. The trailer will be 6-10 minutes, but I’d still like to know how to make a longer piece smaller.
