Quick Question – combining footage
Posted by Jason Kupski on January 10, 2012 at 8:41 pmMy primary footage is at 1080p (24 fps) and my secondary footage is at hdv 1440x1080i (30 fps)
The final output is for a dvd.
Would it be best to have the final output at 24p or 30i? Then render to mpg and perform color correction etc?
Or should i use an intermediary codec, perform color correction / effects.
If so what should my target from rate be and which codec do you recommend? Thanks!

January 11, 2012 at 12:39 amWhich frame rate you choose is personal preference. Since you’re not obsessing over 24p I would render at 30fps (29.97) because Vegas will add telecine to the 24p to bring it up to 30.
I would definitely color correct before rendering to anything. If your target is DVD then your only render options is MainConcept MPEG2 since DVD’s require MPEG2 video. Use the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen template for your audio and the Dolby Digital AC-3 for your audio (render twice one for audio and once for video). These two streams can then be used with DVD Architect to author your DVD.

Is this true for footage from the Canon HV series camcorders? I had read that although Vegas has this capability, Canon didn’t put in the necessary flags and third party apps are required to remove pulldown.

January 11, 2012 at 9:35 pmI think I just got that backwards after rereading my post. In other words, Vegas will not remove pulldown on the 60i footage according to several sources.

All the more reason to set your project to 60i (i.e., 29.97fps).
