  • Quick question about captured clips.

Posted by Pat Francis on May 10, 2007 at 8:52 am

Sorry about the very-vague subject title, but I couldn’t think of a catchy headline.

Anywho, when editing in Avid (at least Media Composer), if you are viewing a clip and set its in and out point, you can hold either (I think) Option and drag it to your bin, making a sub-clip. As opposed to capturing take-by-take, I would capture by scenes, and proceed to split up all of the takes using that method. I’d add descriptions and such to each one, making the editing process rather simple.

As far as I can tell, there is no method of doing a similar thing in Final Cut Pro (I have 5.1.4). Am I mistaken? I prefer doing it that way FAR more than capturing take by take. This is one of the only reasons that I like Avid (I mostly hate it).

    Thanks a lot.

Ermm, I may have got you wrong here Pat, but I think what you need is this. Load your clip into the viewer, play it down and when you want to mark an in & an out then hit “Apple” “U”. This creates a subclip in your browswer window, or specific bin within that window. You can then name these subclips as you like. I hope that’s what you mean…

Mark IN, mark OUT…press APPLE-U. That make a subclip. But be warned, FCP doesn’t have as robust media management as Avid, so subclips don’t always work right. You might not be able to match frame to the master clip, if you online it might not capture only the media from that clip, it might want the whole tape…stuff like that.

I really wish FCP would tighten media management…hopefully FCP 6 addresses this better.

Quite right Shane, what is it with FCP and it’s master/affiliate clip relationships? I’ve had that a couple of times, used 30seconds from a 2 hour feature only for FCP to ask for the whole two hours of footage!
I admit, I don’t do a whole lot of these and have never gone down the ‘make clip independent’ route, does this solve the problem or create a whole new world of wonder?

Wow, that was quite simple. Thanks a lot, though now you have me worried to even use the feature. 🙂

As a quick sub-question, is there a way to manually manage the order of your clips/imported material, as opposed to having them sort by name/duration/whatever? I suppose I could sort of cheat by alphabetizing by comment, and commenting so they go in the order I’d like, but that’d be quite an annoying way to do it.

And now that you mention it, I guess Avid’s Media management is much better than Final Cut’s. I hadn’t noticed, as I’ve been using (and disliking) Avid for a while now, but now that I go back to Final Cut, there are some features that I miss. 🙂

Click in whichever column header you want to order by, like media start. Organize the columns in whatever arrangement you want by dragging the column headers. I could recommend some good books or a training DVD to get you started with the nuts and bolts of this application.

    All the best,

I understand how to do that, but I’m looking to be able to actually manually put the clips in the order I want, as opposed to having it automatically arrange them by a column.

The fact that it does that is annoying, since a subclips will go whereever, as opposed to underneath its master clip.

I’d like to be able to manually move my clips around in the bin, like you can in Avid.

Of course there is the ability to view the contents of a Bin as small, medium or large icons and that will give you the ability to organise them in any way that you drag. If you drag them groupings that you want, then this ordering is preserved between switching to column mode and icon mode. If you select a group and drag them to the timeline, then the order they will be put into the timeline is left to right, top to bottom.
