  • Quick Poll: Music Libraries

Posted by Mark Maness on November 6, 2008 at 2:51 pm

As professionals, we are always looking to improve our quality and sometimes that means looking for updated or new music libraries.

But here’s the real question or issue… I’m looking for an updated music library that has a rock-hop style, a midwestern (heartland) rock style, and something that is somewhere between hard rock and grunge.

Now the issue at hand… Money. I’m looking for this to be reasonably priced. As you know, the economy isn’t doing to hot right now. Budgets are tight and advertisers have had to cut back, but somehow we need to keep trudging along and making quality content. That’s the issue.

Any thoughts? What music library or libraries are you using?

The company I work for have just purchased a blanket license for http://www.audionetworkplc.com
£3000 for unlimited downloads for a year, which for us as a company using five or six different tracks in any given programme is great value for money. Plus it’s great to be able to say to a client “Take a look at this site and pick any music you want.”

Buying single tracks from them is quite expensive, so I couldn’t recommend doing that unless it’s properly factored into the budget from the start.

In addition to traditional libraries keep in mind that there are companies like Revostock who represent many musical artists from a wide range of musical genres for pretty affordable rates. From my POV they allow a producer to target a musical style better than some of the libraries. Plus I like the pay as you play concept.

Killertracks has an enormous collection of libraries incluing the styles you’ve mentioned. You can audition their music with Trakfinder at https://www.killertracks.com/default.aspx?skiplaunchpage=yes

Their pricing structute is very reasonable. They’ll sell individual needle-drop or yearly blanket licenses.

Big fan of using Sonicfire here, as well as mixing it with GarageBand loops.

Also look at Sounddogs, Digital Juice, and The Music Bakery.

We’ve been using Extreme Music (www.extrememusic.com) at Outdoor Channel for the past year and coming from the DeWolfe stuff we had before, it’s a giant improvement. The entire library is hosted online and the search interface is pretty solid. I don’t think they’re especially cheap – but the selection is great.

Can you get the loops in Garage Band to work with SonicFire pro? I thought you needed Midi files to keep the Loops in the same key and time signature as the composition?
