For a win computer where you will do some multitasking 6-8gigs minimum, usually DDR3 is 3 sticks in a set, alot of Mobos have six ram slots so using 2gig sticks you could get 12gigs onboard or 24gigs if you afford the larger sticks. If you are going to use a suite like production premium CS5 12gigs if you can afford it, likewise with a processor, i7 930 or up.

I have 24GB in my quad-core computer. It’s great for running After Effects CS5 and Premiere Pro CS5 together.
