If I drop an NTSC clip into a PAL sequence and apply the G Convertor everythng works great. However, is it correct that I have to use FCP BasicMotion settings and scale the source clip to 120% to fill the PAL frame? It doesn’t mention scaling the image manually with FCP BasicMotion settings to get it to fill the screen. If I don’t it is not filling the screen.

Also, from NTSC to PAL I notice a slight gamma shift making the PAL clip a bit darker than the source. Compressor makes a PAL clip with its Advanced Conversions very quickly and not gamma shift and 1/8 the processing time. Looked pretty good to me and compressor did the scaling.

also, Nattress makes a 25fps clip (QT Player clip info) whereas compressor makes a clip that says it is 24.98. Is it 25 or 24.98?

Qt player clip speed info is notorious, well, strange…
I would not think about it too much.
If you want to be sure, capture some footage with BITC (put it in the top or you will have strange readings) and see what it really does.

Last but not least, if it looks good, it is good.

    Rich,
Compressor can do it fast if you set the Frame Control “off’ or “automatic”, but for a good standard conversion I think you should set it in Custom. And that mean ages waiting for the process to finish. You can do it in Shake too (Timing>Convert) and the result is very good, but Compressor and Shake use the same engine and are the same slow.
I heard of people converting with MPGStreaclip. It seems do it well.

You can scale by hand, or if you use the nesting method, the plugin will scale for you! Video here: https://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/movies.htm shows the nesting method.

I’ve never seen a levels shift inside FCP. Which codecs are you using?

Compressor, when I last tested it took about 40 times longer to render a conversion that looked better than the plugin. I’m sure they’ve made it faster since then, but not by that much 🙂

I got it on the scaling thing. Thanks.

Using DVCPro50 clips and each time I render it with Nattress the clip gets darker. Compressor is an exact match luma wise.

That’s so weird. I’ve never seen it get darker. Have you got a BMD card installed?

I did the test with 5.1.4 on a dual 1 gig G4 with a Pipe Studio card.

It made a shift in both directions making the clip darker.

The Pipe has never had this issue in other types of converting/rendering. But I can’t rule out operator error either!

If you just put an NTSC clip in the PAL timeline and render (without my plugin) do you get the same shit?
