  • quick interpretation question involving AE renders

Posted by Rick Neely on November 4, 2006 at 7:39 pm

    Hi folks,

rendered a movie with a lot of movement in AE. I see slight video fields in between frames which is a common occurrence. this is for NTSC interlaced broadcast 720-480. Is it easier, better, recommeneded to:

    (1) render in AE with either upper or lower field dominant? If so, which one?

    (2) render normally, then apply interlace effect in FCP, If so, which setting?

    thanks. Just trying to improve.

    Rick,

How are you monitoring? What format is your end product? What’s its destination, broadcast, web, DVD?

Let’s assume all three since I often output for all three,

Lets say I’m making a Betacam SP master out of the AJA IO, I also want a a good high-res DVD using DVDSP.

and for goods measure, let’s say my neighboring production studio routes my AJA output directly into a broadcast switcher to be played on a projection screen in an auditorium.

Best choice for each scenario. thanks!

[Rick Neely] “rendered a movie with a lot of movement in AE. I see slight video fields in between frames which is a common occurrence. this is for NTSC interlaced broadcast 720-480. Is it easier, better, recommeneded to:”

So you’re working in DV? Uncompressed SD is 720×486. Either way, Lower Field First is what you use for both DV and Uncompressed SD resolutions.

[Rick Neely] “(2) render normally, then apply interlace effect in FCP, If so, which setting?”

Always render interlaced in the proper field order in After Effects to get the best looking video in whatever NLE you’re using.

As Walter says, render 8-bit uncompressed 720×486 lower field first. No reason in your case whatsoever to interlace after the fact in FCP. For distribution on the web consider deinterlacing.
