    hi, all –

i’ve seen two effects used on a couple of reels and i’ve been trying to figure out how they’re done, but alas, i am an AE newbie with great ambitions.

the first effect in question can be viewed here:

the effect basically involves separating a single image into its 3 RGB colour channels…sometimes, i see the CMYK channels…

the second effect occurs when the footage has an almost under-developed/exposed look to it…

It is most noticeable around the edges of elements in the shot.

    hope I am making sense.

To get that first effect I often do as follows:
-Take your source material and add the effect Channel > Shift Channels. Then duplicate the layer 2 more times so you have 3 copies.
-Name the copies “Red”, “Green”, and “Blue”.
-On the layer named “Red” copy set the “Take Green From” and the “Take Blue From” parameters to “All Off.” You have now isolated the Red channel.
-Do the same thing for the other two layers, just this time isolate the blue and green channels.
-Last comes the creative part. Here you can lower the opactity of the layers and change the blend modes. Screen or one of the Dodge modes often look good. It’s also good to add a slight change in position on each of the layers, too. It’s all up to what you think looks good.
