I am helping someone export videos out of Avid Composer which are destined for the web. I work mainly with FCS and and have limited access to Composer to figure this out, so it would be great if someone could chime in. The videos are in 30i NTSC projects. The footage was originally on DVDs which I encoded to Avid Meridien Compressed 2:1 quicktimes in Streamclip. The last time I was in Composer, I exported a Quicktime reference and then brought it into Compressor to encode to h.264. How do you go about doing this within Composer? The individual does not have Apple Compressor.

Also I should note that the Quicktime Ref video had a thin white line on the very bottom of the image which was not present in Avid Composer. I imagine it has something to do with the difference between the default raster size in avid of 720×486 and the footages’ resolution of 720×480. Can someone confirm this and is there a way to resolve it within Avid Composer? To remove the white line in compressor I cropped the bottom 6 lines or so and it turned out how it should without the line. Also the videos sizes need to be limited to under 100mb.

So again the question is how do you export out of Avid Composer for web destination (h.264), which will allow for cropping (unless there is another way of exporting videos without that white line) and some level of control of bit rates to control the size of the exported files.

    Thanks in advance.

Export a QuickTime reference of the sequence and use Sorenson Squeeze to crop and encode for your final delivery needs.

Michael is spot on. I have found a top crop of 4 and bottom crop of 2 works well. Sorenson also has a decent deinterlacing filter but our best look comes from a video mixdown in MC adding timewarp @100% rendered out progressive fluidmotion. You will definitely want to deinterlace at some point.

Yes, deinterlacing is a must. Ricky you mention cropping from the top and bottom. There only seems to be a white line on the bottom. I’m guessing composer is justifying the image to the very top of the frame and thus the white line only appears on the bottom. It’s kind of weird that this white line doesn’t show up while actually viewing the footage in composer only when it is exported.

Does Squeeze give you an estimate of the exported file size?

I don’t believe it will show “expected” file size estimate but I am unsure. Once you set frame rate and frame size there is a “constrain file size to” box and you can enter the size, but choices like fps and frame size are unavailable once that is checked, so uncheck to set those items then check to limit file size. I believe all this is correct but I have never restricted file size.
