I am working on an HD comp, and some of my layers are 8 times as wide and high as the comp dimensions. Is it possible to view the areas of these layers that lie outside the comp but still see which part of the layer will be in the comp? Can I see what lies off the pasteboard as it were while animating?

There’s no way to do it inside an HD Comp, the Comp boundaries determine what is visible.

However there is a technique that might help you *if* you have enough memory and horse power to use it.

Work inside a Comp that is 8 times wide and 8 times higher than an HD Comp. Make a Solid layer that is the dimension of the HD render, leave it in its default position in the center of the Working Comp and make it a Guide Layer so it won’t render.

Use Region of Interest to toggle the visible area of the Comp Viewer on/off to your what is inside the Guide Layer.

    Animate your layers as usual.

Make a Render Comp that meets you’re HD specs and drop the Working Comp into it to render.

If you’re using 3D layers, you can change from the Active Camera view to a Custom View, then use the camera navigation tools to zoom out and view beyond what the active camera will see.

As a workaround: How about making a pre-comp that is 8 times as wide and high as the final comp dimensions.

You could even add a guide layer that shows the eventual cropping dimensions.
