  • Questions on exporting audio to mxf

Posted by Ruben Kocx on February 11, 2009 at 12:09 pm

    Hey guys,

Is it possible to export my timeline to a mxf file with 8 audiochannels seperatly embedded in this file? There are 8 audiolayers in my edit with the voice-over on a3. My goal is to keep the voice-over on the same audiochannel in the mxf file and not mixed with any other audiolayers. By trying every option I can think of, I still turn out with 2 channels mixed (voice to the left channel) and all the other 6 complete empty!

    Any help would be great!

    MXF or OMF?

Mxf. Should I’ve mentioned that I’m working with Final Cut pro?

Nope, you’re all good. What kind of MXF are you exporting to and how are you doing it?

    Hi Jeremy

I’m working in an imx 50 timeline. Before exporting I changed the audio export settings to 8 outputs: dual mono. I Ignored the fcp warning to downmix to stereo, but once, also attempted not to. Then I exported with “sony xdcam”, but placed the folder on my harddisk. settings: imx 50 625/ 50i audio 8 ch x 18 bit. recompress all frames: off.

I also tried placing my voice over in another audio layer, like a1 or a2. But it didn’t seem to work.

    Hey Ruben-

Exporting to the IMX codec is unfortunately, not really exporting to MXF. If you want to export to a true MXF format, you need to take a look at MXF4QT Export:

    https://mxf4mac.com/mxf4qtexport

That being said, if you changed your audio to 8 outputs and then use the Export > Quicktime Movie command, not QT Conversion, the 8 channels should stick. Try export > QUicktime Movie and then bring that movie right back in to FCP. Does it have 8 channels?

That should work just fine; no need to pay for any more software. 🙂

To use the File > Export > Sony XDCAM option, you do need to have your sequence Audio Outputs set up with 8 channels / Dual Mono as you said.

Maybe you just haven’t told FCP how to map from your sequence’s audio tracks to these output channels? In the Timeline window, right-click on the “A1” widget to bring up a little context menu that has Audio Output on it and choose the appropriate output channel 1. Repeat for “A2”, “A3” etc.

From the sounds of it you’ll probably find that A3/A4 are mapped to outputs 1/2, etc. which means they’ll be getting mixed with A1/A2 rather than having their own output channels.

    Robert,

Your advise worked! That was exactly what I was looking for. But unfortnately, when I reimport the mxf file back into fcp, the track with the voice over is clipped. Even when I set the downmix to -10 db.
    what happened!?

Sorry, I don’t know, I’m not an FCP audio expert.

Just to confirm, were you setting the Downmix level in the Sequence Settings before exporting to MXF?

Have you tried exporting the sequence to QuickTime, with File > Export > QuickTime Movie? If you bring the movie back into FCP does it show the same problem as the MXF file? (The Export > Sony XDCAM option doesn’t do anything different with the video or audio, it just rewraps it into a different file format, so you’d expect an exported movie to have the same problem as the MXF file.)

Yep, before exporting to mxf I’ve set the downmix level in the sequence settings to -3 but also -10. I’ve tried them all now. By exporting to a quicktime movie (like you said) the problem is still there.

I am not aware of this issue with our solution. We are just working on the FCP export plug-in that will be an addition to our QT exporter and we currently test all this very comprehensively. The audio routing in FCP works like expected.

What happens if you import the exported MXF file with our free Import demo (reads the first 30 seconds of MXF)?
