  • Questions about sizing images and footage

I’m creating a promotional video that integrates some video footage and photographs, intended for both our web site (via YouTube) and distributable DVD’s. Being new to Vegas and video editing in general, I’ve discovered that there is a lot to understand about how to prepare images.

Problem is, I don’t even know the right questions to ask. I know that there are things I need to understand about RESOLUTION and the size of the images.

Is there a Vegas related tutorial somewhere that will explain that sort of stuff for me?

[jsteinamite] “Being new to Vegas and video editing in general, I’ve discovered that there is a lot to understand about how to prepare images.”

Just drop the image on the timeline, open Pan/Crop, right-click the image in the Pan/Crop window, and choose “Match Output Aspect”. Now resize, pan, zoom… as needed and you’re done.

    jsteinamite,

I always resize my images at 720×480 and I do this in Photoshop using an action. It’s very fast, especially when working with hundreds of images. I know that it should be 655×480, but I use 720×480 because the image seems to look better. Once you resize your images, place them into another folder and name it so you can find your images at a later time. Bring them into Vegas and let Vegas do the rest. Use match Aspect Ratio reduce interlace flicker if necessary. If you need to overlap your images, buy Excalibur from Ed Troxel web site, it’s a time saver and well worth the money.
    Good Luck!

If you are going to zoom in with pan and crop use a higher resolution image. PNG is the format Vegas seems to like best – especially if you have any alpha channels.

    Hi Ralph.

Thanks for this info. I wonder if it’s possible to do a batch resize of a whole bunch of photos in Photoshop. I have so many. And by the way, does this resizing cut down on the amount of memory that will be used by the computer when it’s trying to draw all of the images in the video trak?

Also, I’ve noticed that in many of my pictures that were taken in landscape view, there is a thin black border at the top and bottom of the image, sort of like a movie fitted for television. Know what I mean? I think I might have flicked a switch somewhere and unwittingly asked the program to do this. How to I tellit to fill the whole screen with the image?

    Hi jsteinamite,

Sorry for the late response. I just got back from a cruise. Yes, you can use actions in Photoshop to speed up the process and as Ed stated earlier, use Match aspect ratio.
