  • Question on transcoding when FCP X crashes

Posted by Kyler Boudreau on November 18, 2012 at 3:57 pm

I’m an Avid / FCP7 guy that has this weekend started using FCPX. Like it!

I was importing footage into an event (source is Canon 5D). It was fine for a few minutes, and then FCPX crashed. Reopened the project, and everything was there as far as thumbnail clips, but I’m not experienced in what happens when it crashes. Two questions:

    1) Since the transcoding to ProRes stopped, do I just highlight all of the clips and say “Transcode”. Will FCPX intelligently pick up where it left off?

    2) Are there other things to look for in terms of data corruption if FCPX crashes?

    Thanks for the help!

For me 10.0.6 has not been as stable as 10.0.5, but not so extreme as to cause me to roll back.

If you have legacy FCP on the same system, you might want to check this out. https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4722?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

If you experience repeat crashes trashing preferences is a good first step. https://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

When I’ve experienced project-specific problems, I’ve sometimes been able to work through them out by duplicating the project and pasting in the original TL. Also trashing the render files, which you can do from within FCP.

So far haven’t experienced corrupted clips from crashes…been lucky.

Forgot about your transcode question. I think the answer is yes. If you go to your event, you’ll find a transcoded media folder. In that, you should find whatever PR files were created.

    Awesome – thanks Russ.

I looks like there is a blue line on the clips not transcoded yet. *i think*.

My crash happened when I tried to bring in Video, and then start a separate audio import at the same time. Doing them separately fixed the problems.

I have seem FCPX crash so many times dealing with AVCHD files that I have literally given up. I have started to use Adobe Premiere and thus far that has been stable (although it has its own maddening quirks).

I have probably sent 20+ crash reports to Apple in the past 2-3 weeks. What a shame!
