question on settings
Hi everyone –
I am a new premiere user, a longtime editor using Vegas. Now because of interoperability I am making the switch!I have a client requesting EDLs, and a couple very specific things. Because they are very high end I want to make sure that I have everything correct before I transfer.
here is what they requested:
•Project needs to be a 24fps project – so MPG is 24fps
◦MP4 (MPEG 4) is the best way for us to import the video file.
•Header and Leader on all deliveries (2 pop and tail pop)
•FFOA – first frame of action
•LFOA – last frame of action
• Explain any opticals you guys have createdMost of that I understand, but the BOLD items I am a little unsure of. I “think” that the header and leader is a 5 second header followed by 2 seconds of silence. One audio pop comes at 1 second, and one audio pop comes at the beginning of the black screen.
FFOA and LFOA… is that something that I would just note? Or is there a way to denote that INSIDE the project?

The time between the LFOA and the LFOP used to be a ‘tail’ for the last shoot in the reel, so the reel change won’t eat up a dialog line or some Important action. The same wirh FFOP and FFOA You basically need to mark it so the reels, or virtual reels, has some point of reference.

I’m actually more confused. The client didn’t request anything with a LFOP.
What does that refer to?

Last Frame of Picture.
They usually calculate it from the LFOA.
What are you doing exactly?. Is your work to be organised in reels (20 mins) for kinescope or DCP?. multiplexing maybe?.
They are basically asking you to mark which part of the video file is “your program” and which parts are “handles” to edit out the head and tails. These are concepta from taditional film editing, maybe in your country used for encapsullation and multiplexing, but without knowing what exactly are you doing, and what is you client intended to do with it, is hard to ellaborate.

A Leader is a countdown, either from 10, 8, or 5 seconds before program start with a sync pop at the 2 sec. mark (2 pop) followed by black and silence. A tail pop comes at the end of the program (5-10 sec. after?) and is used as a sync check.

thanks guys. these are actually short programs for a pretty big studio, so I am certain there are some entrenched ancient editors over there who will reject anything that isn’t exactly perfect.
The point is though, these aren’t settings that I can add in Premiere. For instance if they ask for FFOA should I set the timecode to start on the first frame?
How would I do that? (since I’m down the rabbit hole…)

Every country, facility and ‘ancient editor’ has their procedures and glitches. If they haven’t provided anything more specific, I’ll go for the standard:
Here in Spain, I would simply add the leader, ten seconds of black just after the 2-pop, and sync the FFOA with the 1:00:00:00, so if your secuence would start at 00:59:40:00, adding 10 seconds countdown/2pop and 10 seconds black head will take you there.
Adding a text slate (a simple text title 5 second) identifying the program, reel and tc where FFOA is is also a good idea.

I don’t know which version of Premiere you’re using but the current CC version has a Universal Counting Leader (complete with 2 pop) in the “New Item” list.
