Question on setting up school lab.
I’m going to be graduating in May with a degree in Technology Education. I’m doing my student teaching in a videography classroom which is strictly Mac/FCP so it’s really all I have experience with as far as editing goes besides playing with Premiere Pro here at home. Eventually I want to teach videography/digital photography. Problem is, I’m more or less a PC guy (I worked in IT throughout high school for Penndot), and thus I will probably want to stay with PCs (I’m simply more comfortable with them, I’m not bashing Macs at all). I would, however, like to set up a lab that’s as high end as possible, giving the students an introduction to programs and skills they can use if they want to enter the industry. However, it seems Premiere simply isn’t an industry used software whereas FCP and Avid are. Avid seems like it may be too overwhelming for students and have a larger learning curve. I do like FCP’s ease of use, but I feel premiere pro is very similar. I guess my question to those of you here, if you were going to teach students from a very introduction to hopefully a third level class (that they can take after successfully completing the first and second levels), what would you do? Go with FCP and a Mac lab or a pc lab and premiere pro or avid? I like that the integration of Premiere with the rest of the creative suite (I’m pretty strong in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign), and I would most likely be teaching a desktop publishing class (or web development) class as well, so who knows. I’m not bashing Macs, as I think OSX is great, but I feel the price is a bit steep and I like being able to make individual upgrades and customizations to the systems (if I went with a PC lab, I would build it myself). Btw, this is a great site.
Thanks.
Matt
