  • Question on rotoscoping lightsabers with Andrew Kramers Preset.

Posted by Antoine Vo on April 19, 2008 at 5:04 am

Me and my fiends are making a movie for school. We plan to have lightsabers in it and im in charge of the editing. I’m currently using Andrew Kramers Lightsaber preset and its working great except for 2 small problems (probably easily fixable).

First of all, at one point in the movie, the lightsaber is completely blocked by his body. How can I make the lightsaber invisible ONLY for those few frames?

Also, at one point, you see the hilt and the tip of the lightsaber, but not the middle part, because it is blocked by his head. How do I make it so that you can’t see the lightsaber where his head is? thanks.

On the lightsaber layer, draw a mask (Pen Tool, Oval Mask tool, etc) where the head is to block out the light saber. Set a Mask Shape Keyframe (MM reveals). You can also feather the mask. If you need to move the mask because the head moves, double click it, move it, hit Enter, this sets a new keyframe.

sorry for being a complete noob on Adobe After Effects. I understand the concept of a mask but when I try to put it on the head of the person, I can still see the lightsaber when I replay the video. How do i fix this? thanks.

My bad. I hadn’t seen that tut for a long time (when it first came out), but if you look at Light Saber v2, at 6 min 55 sec Andrew does exactly what you’re asking:

    https://www.videocopilot.net/presets.html?id=99

He uses another solid layer on top to mask the Saber (also on a solid layer).

May the force be with you.
